The Short Answer

Use Xtream Codes whenever your app offers it. Use the M3U link when the app only accepts a playlist URL or file, or as a backup when you are troubleshooting. Both give you the same subscription; the difference is how the app talks to the server.

What an M3U Link Is

M3U is a simple playlist format: a text file that lists streams one after another, each with a name, a group (category), and an address. When you paste an M3U link into an app, the app downloads that whole list and builds its channel menu from it.

Because it is just a list, the app has to download all of it every time it refreshes. On large subscriptions this can take a while on slower devices, and the TV guide usually comes from a separate EPG address.

What Xtream Codes Is

Xtream Codes is a login method made of three parts: a server URL, a username, and a password. Instead of downloading one giant list, the app asks the server for what it needs: live categories, films, series, guide data, and your account status, including the expiry date. That is why apps using Xtream Codes often feel quicker and show neatly separated sections for live TV, movies, and series.

Which Apps Support Which Format

  • IPTV Smarters Pro: supports both. Choose "Login with Xtream Codes API" for the smoothest setup. Our 5-minute activation guide shows each screen.
  • TiviMate: supports both. Pick Xtream Codes when adding a playlist, as covered in our TiviMate setup guide.
  • Smart IPTV: works with a playlist link, which is uploaded through the app's website using your TV's MAC address. Our Smart TV installation guide covers the process.

How to Read an M3U Link

Many M3U links follow a recognizable pattern. A typical one looks like this (example values only):

http://example-server.com:8080/get.php?username=YOURNAME&password=YOURPASS&type=m3u_plus&output=ts
  • The part before /get.php (here http://example-server.com:8080) is the server URL.
  • The value after username= is your username.
  • The value after password= is your password.
  • output=ts or output=m3u8 sets the stream format. If one format stutters on your device, support can tell you whether the other is available.

This means that if your link follows this pattern and an app asks for Xtream Codes, you can often pull the three details straight out of it. If your link looks different, ask us for your Xtream Codes details instead of guessing.

Keep Both Logins Private

Notice that the M3U link contains your username and password in plain text. Treat it like a password: do not paste it into public forums, screenshots, or shared notes. If you think someone else has it, contact support so we can help secure your account.

When to Switch from One to the Other

  • Xtream Codes login fails but you are sure of the details: try the M3U link in the same app. If it works, the problem is likely the server URL format you entered.
  • M3U playlist loads very slowly or crashes the app: switch to Xtream Codes, which loads sections on demand.
  • The guide is empty on M3U: add the EPG URL, or switch to Xtream Codes.

If neither format connects, run through our Xtream Codes and M3U error checklist before contacting support.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is Xtream Codes better than M3U?

For most people, yes. Xtream Codes logins are shorter to type, load live TV, films, series, and the TV guide automatically, and are easier to fix when something goes wrong. M3U is the better choice only when your app does not support Xtream Codes.

Can I use both at the same time?

You can save both in different apps, but they draw on the same account. Your plan's screen limit applies to the account as a whole, not to each login format.

What is an EPG URL and do I need it?

An EPG URL (often an XMLTV address) supplies the program guide. Apps using Xtream Codes usually fetch it automatically. With an M3U link, some apps need you to paste the EPG address separately to see what is on.

My M3U link stopped working. Has it expired?

It may have, or the details inside it may have changed. Check your subscription end date first, then ask support to confirm your current link before re-adding it to your app.
